We are in the process of painting our entire house. It’s not huge by any means but we do have very high ceilings in our living room/kitchen which has created an extra issue. YES TO SPENDING PLENTY OF TIME DOING PREP WORK. It’s amazing long it takes to get everything ready to even crack open a paint can. It does make a world of difference though. Jenn February 25, 2015
It is very difficult to determine how a particular color will look on your walls, and with your lighting. If you have a color in mind, it is a good idea to buy a sample.
Even so, you could still choose to go the DIY route and save yourself thousands of dollars in labor costs. All you’ll need are a few supplies and some cans of paint, all of which you can find at hardware stores or big-box home supply stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot.
A semi-gloss paint offers visible shine on home exteriors and is ideal for surfaces that require frequent cleaning. The glossier sheen makes semi-gloss paint more durable than satin, so it’s easier to clean. Semi-gloss paint can also endure harsh weather conditions and withstand excess moisture. While a semi-gloss paint finish can look beautiful on trim details, it isn’t a good choice if you need to conceal cracks, chips, or other surface imperfections.
The house we’re working on is about 900 square feet. All in all it cost about $1300 to paint the entire place. The quote from our contractor was $2500 and that number didn’t include skim coating the dining room, which we ran into unexpectedly. So we saved over $1000 doing it ourselves, and our cost included a paint sprayer we purchased! Actually, let me break down all of the costs for you. (This is a rough breakdown, all numbers are rounded.)

Your options are unlimited when choosing your home’s new paint color. Whether you match the color to your home’s style or personality, the correct paint sheen will need to be based on the surface of your home. For example, Sherwin-Williams recommends a satin sheen for trims and a flat, matte finish for siding.
When planning a painting project, there are many additional costs to consider beyond the basic interior or exterior job. There are many tasks that painters complete while they do the job. If you need any of them done, it’s important to know the costs so that you can factor any additional projects into your overall painting project.

When you paint your house interior, don’t forget about your interior trim! Your home’s baseboards, doors, window trim, cabinets and other decorative wood details take the most beating inside your home. Aside from simply wanting to change the color of your trim, you will find that trim inside rooms with high foot traffic will show more signs of wear and chipping than those that aren’t frequently used. Most people tend to repaint home interior trim every 2 to 4 years depending on where the trim is located.
