Wait for clear, dry weather before you prime and paint. Outdoor temperatures should be between 50 and 90 degrees F. Don’t prime or paint in the morning before the dew has evaporated, and stop painting before evening dampness sets in. Don’t paint on windy or dusty days.
Painting both the inside and outside of your home is a great solution that refreshes your space and adds value. It’s more affordable and convenient than a full-scale remodel. The top reasons most homeowners paint their home’s interior is to change their aesthetic, protect the walls themselves, and enhance the quality of the air indoors by reducing the dust particles in the air.

While flat paint finishes used to be the most popular, they aren’t used much on exteriors these days. Flat paint is matte, porous, and susceptible to fading and mildew problems. Most customers desire paint finishes that are shinier and more durable, but flat paint doesn’t have to be ruled out completely. Because flat paint isn’t shiny, it can be a great option for disguising flaws on older homes. However, a flat finish is only recommended for exterior walls, and not areas that are touched often such as doors, railings, or windows.
Request a portfolio, too. Painters might not update their websites frequently, but they’re sure to have documentation of their best work that they can share with you in some format.
BEHR paints are available in quarts for painting a small area, and five-gallon pails for a very large area.
Because of my lack of experience, I made only about $13 per hour. However, I paid attention to invoicing and other aspects of the business on my occasional contract jobs, so I could probably start a painting business myself if I wanted to. This leads us to our next advantage . . .
Be sure to use a stain-blocking primer in high-humidity and high-moisture rooms, such as the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room to reduce the chance of the paint flaking, peeling, bubbling or blistering.

Awesome post! I just wanted to add a couple tips about cleaning brushes that might be helpful. If you’re painting and are coming back for second coats later the same day, you can put your brush in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out while you’re taking a break. When cleaning your brushes, use Murphy Oil Soap, it really helps to get the paint off and is eco friendly. You can even soak brushes in it and clean them later on if you’re a giant procrastinator like I am 🙂 I love following your progress with this house and am so stoked to see the finished product! Cheers and have a great day! Alexandra February 25, 2015 Jill @ Champagne for Everyday February 25, 2015
You can use painters tape wrapped backward around your hand to do this. Press your taped hand onto the roller, and it will work in a similar manner as a lint roller.
Filing siding and trim. Use a putty knife to fill deep gouges or holes in wood siding with vinyl exterior spackling compound or, for a semi-transparent stained finish, wood-toned filler. Allow the compound to dry completely. Then, repeat if necessary. Apply exterior spackling compound, allow to dry, and then sand. © Don Vandervort, HomeTips
