The amount of preparation required before painting varies considerably by job. Some locations will require wallpaper or paint to be removed and the surface prepared with primer or other material. Other jobs simply require the surface to be cleaned, so that the new paint can adhere to the surface.
My house was a 70s build, and almost completely wallpapered with a lot of the wallpaper painted over, which definitely didn’t help in removing it all! I also had a slightly different problem with removing wallpaper – the previous owners had used vinyl wallpaper, which when steamed stretched a lot rather than scraping off easily. It was easier to just score and scrape or peel off the paper dry, and later steam off any papery bits that were left on the wall.

Although I previously hated painting, that’s what I did most of the time, and you know what? I started to enjoy it! Let’s look at some of the advantages of this work.

Some of these techniques are usually only contained to interior paint jobs, such as painting accent walls or two-tone walls. Hey, folks. It’s Josh. I’ve been super busy these past couple of months working on our HFHS project house. As we mentioned in our last update, the house is coming along, and we can’t wait to share more with you soon. We’ve learned a LOT while working on this project! One task we recently completed was painting all of the interior. A lot more goes into painting than you might guess, so I thought it would be fun to share a thorough breakdown of everything we encountered and learned as we painted this house. If you have any big painting projects in your future, I highly recommend you check out some of these tips and lessons we learned so hopefully your project goes smoothly.
The method used to apply the paint varies, depending on the type of paint and the surface itself. For example, oil-based paint is best applied with a roller, and latex based paint can be sprayed onto the surface. The size of the project, the colors used and the layout of the walls also can affect the method used.
Generally, the house plan for a 1,500 sq. ft. home fits two or three bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. To paint the interior of a home this size, the cost will be between $4,500 and $6,000. If you’re only focused on the exterior, expect to pay between $2,250 and $5,800. Sometimes, it makes sense to do it all together. The average cost to paint a 1,500 square foot house is approximately $6,700 to $11,800.
Okay, so you’ve come this far and are now understanding the costs involved when painting yourself vs finding a pro.
Next, find the square footage of the surface to be painted by first measuring each wall in a room across. Now you can multiply the length of the surface by the height of the wall.
Nigel notes that there are two very important reasons why you want a detailed proposal. The first, as described above, is so you can make an informed decision about what exactly you will be getting for your money. The second is because the proposal will act as a road map for the project, to which not only you, but also the crew, can refer. For example, at the end of each day Nigel’s designated foreperson checked in with me to review the progress. He or she was able to tell me that this area was going faster or slower than the bid indicated and ask me if/how we wanted to adjust. In other words the bids served as a point of reference that facilitated mutual expectations and clear communication throughout the entire project. Above: Shiny painted floors at The Rose Hotel Deal.
