When painting a large space, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, and not knowing exactly where to start. It’s almost inevitable that you’ll drip, spill or splatter, so it’s important to paint the room in the correct order. As a rule of thumb, we recommend painting the ceiling first, then the walls and finally the trim.
Pros and homeowners can apply paint by spraying or rolling it onto the wall. Spraying takes less time and less work, resulting in lower labor costs for you. You can save money, especially on large jobs, by hiring a painting contractor who uses a sprayer. .

After you've picked your colors and done your prep work on the walls, it's time to apply some paint. But forget everything you've seen your fellow homeowners do on the popular DIY home improvement shows.
Before purchasing, hold the brush as you would when painting. Make sure it feels comfortable to grip. Fan the bristles, checking for gaps—bristles should fan evenly. “Bounce” the tip of the brush to test for springiness. Before painting, always make sure that the surfaces you intend to clean are completely dry. This will increase the possibility of ending up with a smooth, perfectly even painted surface. Therefore, avoid painting when it’s rainy or excessively humid.
When painting along glass, don’t bother to mask it if you have a steady hand. Allow the paint to lap onto the glass by about 1/16 inch. Remove the wet paint from the glass with a rag wrapped around the end of a putty knife. Then, after the paint sets-up, use a razor blade to remove any remaining paint.
Be prepared to “play” with a color wheel. We'll put one in your hands so you can see, right before your very eyes, how every color has a complementary “cousin.” Spending time with a color wheel can help you choose a color palette for your home painting project. Also known as a color scheme, it can guide many of your purchases, and not just for paint, but also for accessories and window treatments.
To figure out your home’s paintable surface area, first multiply your house’s exterior perimeter by its height. Then, measure the area of all doors, windows, shutters, and other parts of your house not included in the painting project. Based on the number of friends who painstakingly share their own painting horror stories, I’m not alone. Luckily for me, I have finally found a great painting contractor, Nigel Costolloe, owner of Catchlight Painting, in Newton, MA. I wish I could say that I came to Nigel due to my superior knowledge of how to sleuth out and hire great painters. Alas he was the guy I called to fix a job-gone-wrong.
