Before you begin scraping, sanding, and painting, drape and mask-off surfaces and areas where you don’t want paint chips, sawdust, paint, and mess.
First, calculate the actual paint product cost. Assume that at least two coats of paint will be needed for adequate coverage with any color change.
.
The size will also affect how much primer and paint you’ll need to purchase. As a reference, one gallon of any Behr paint will cover approximately 250 to 400 square feet (one coat). Your home will most likely need two coats, especially if you’re choosing a darker color.
Painting the exterior of your home is more complicated than simply buying and applying paint. The effort requires a great deal of knowledge and skill in order to achieve the best possible results. In addition, preparation is vitally important.
1. Read the directions! When I use a new machine or tool, I usually just go for it and learn along the way. For a sprayer, there are so many variables that can make or break the outcome: clogging, pressure, priming, cleaning, etc. all play a role. Read the directions and you’ll know how to deal with all of those issues as they come along.
If you need to touch-up any areas on the walls or ceilings make sure you use the same applicator to do your touch-ups as you used when you originally applied the paint. And try to do your touch-ups when the surface has not yet completely dried.
Brush sizes. For miscellaneous siding work, choose a 4-inch brush that has a straight edge. Get a tapered 1 1/2-inch brush for window sashes and a 2-inch brush for trim.

The second thing that we needed to do was prep the walls for paint. That required several things:
The weather and climate of where you live will greatly impact how long your exterior paint film will last. If your home experiences harsh, direct sunlight all summer, the paint will bubble and fade more quickly than if your home was in a shady area. Alternatively, if you live in an area with long, harsh winters, high humidity, or bad storms, your paint could fail sooner and cause the exterior paint film to age at a faster rate.

Use fine-grit sandpaper to remove the gloss from the surface you’re painting. You want to use sandpaper to remove just the glossy part, not all the old paint.
We work with clients in all industries, below are just a few of the top industries we work with:
For best adhesion, brush-on the primer. Using a 4-inch brush for siding or a 2-inch brush for trim, work from the top down, brushing in line with the siding’s grain. Brush out any drips or splatters.
It takes skill and nerve to paint the old structures. Some of the houses rise a good distance from the ground and the architectural designs make for interesting corners and angles. I respect the work these guys do, and they earn every penny we pay them. Animandel March 12, 2014
How often your house needs repainting depends on the type of siding on your home, the climate where you live, how well you prepared for the last paint job, and the paint quality. You’ll know it’s time to repaint when you see signs like peeling or faded paint. Most homes could use a new paint job every 5 to 10 years.
Use soap and water to clean up latex paints, and paint thinner to clean up alkyd paints. Clean your brushes and gear right after painting. Do not ever pour paint thinner or excess paint down the drain or onto the ground—this is a very serious source of ground-water pollution. Keep old paint and solvents in an old sealed paint can, and dispose of it at a toxic-waste collection site.
