An apprentice painter generally charges between $25 and $40 per hour for their services. Painters at this level of expertise are usually newer and best hired for simple interior and exterior paint jobs. Many of these professionals are still learning the ins and outs of the industry, so you should consider that when deciding how much detail and time your painting project will entail. Though the cost of a professional painter at this level will be lower per hour, you may not get the best possible quality.

Your painter can be a freelancer, a painting contractor, or an employee with a painting company. Whatever the case, you should always look for a licensed painter who has experience working on projects like yours and is willing to give you a written estimate. Ideally, that estimate should include labor and material costs, price for prep work, selection of primer and paint brands, inspection fees, and cleanup costs.
Factors that affect whether you can or should paint your house yourself include: 1) the condition of your home’s siding and trim, 2) your house’s height and size, 3) your abilities and stamina, and 4) your available time.

We prepped the house by pressure washing. I found this affordable pressure washer on Amazon and it worked great! We sprayed the brick with just water to clean it. The vinyl was sprayed with a small amount of outdoor cleaner added to really loosen the grime. We worked from top to bottom and used a ladder with ladder stabilizer, making sure not to spray upward on the siding (this would cause water to run behind the siding which can be very bad). Once this was done, we let the siding completely dry before the next steps.
So, why is it that virtually all exterior painting jobs seem to be done only in one season? Hint- It is because no one wants to feel cold outside!
The cost to paint your home’s exterior will be a bit less overall, though the paint products themselves are a bit more costly. On average, expect to pay between $3,500 and $7,000. On top of enhancing your curb appeal, repainting your exterior increases the value of your home. Plus, it gives you the chance to customize the look of your home to your exact specifications.
For big jobs, bids can vary by tens of thousands of dollars. Chances are that lower bids mean less prep. Or they could use cheaper materials, or they may not follow time-consuming safety protocol, or don’t pay their workers a living wage. On the other end of the spectrum, some painters may jack up the price based on your zip code or even because they don’t really need or want your business. In order to truly compare apples to apples, i.e. really understand what you money is buying, you need a detailed proposal from all your contractors.
To give you some more insight, let’s look into each painting surface type and the considerations when coming up with a cost for each.

The lists above are by no means exhaustive, but they should give you an idea of when you can or can’t get away with skipping that initial step. And, as you may have figured out already, in the majority of cases it is a good idea to invest the time in a coat of primer. In fact, it may save you enough time and expense in the long-run to make it more than worthwhile!
Use soap and water to clean up latex paints, and paint thinner to clean up alkyd paints. Clean your brushes and gear right after painting. Do not ever pour paint thinner or excess paint down the drain or onto the ground—this is a very serious source of ground-water pollution. Keep old paint and solvents in an old sealed paint can, and dispose of it at a toxic-waste collection site.
