Once you’re done with your ceiling it’s time to move onto the trims. This is one of the trickiest parts to get right. A huge plus of painting the trim before walls is that you don’t have to worry about a drop or two getting onto the wall. Since it’s not such a problem to have some paint touch the walls, the processed is much easier.
For large spaces and walls we recommend using a roller. Using an extension pole will also speed up the paint project dramatically. To ensure a smooth and even surface make sure you:
To remove any loose paint from a smooth stucco surface, use a scraper as discussed above. If the surface is textured, remove loose paint with a wire brush. Then, regardless of whether the surface is smooth or textured, give the stucco surface some “tooth” for new paint to grip by “scratching” it with a wire brush.
I’ve been painting homes for over 15 years and I think you’ve nailed it: PREPPING. Most DIY’ers and home owners have little to no knowledge about the amount of time and cost it takes to prepare a project prior to painting. Your Article did a Great job in explaining some of the procedures that are necessary for a truly professional paint job. All to often the prepping is weak or non existing. As you pointed out, covering badly stained walls or ceilings with a coat of Kiln is probably not enough. Just wondering how many hours were spent in the prepping of your project? To keep trim, woodwork and doors looking beautiful in the years to come, they’ll need to be prepped meticulously. The exterior of older homes may have many layers of paint built up. You will need to decide if you will be OK with cratering, ridges and different levels of paint under the final product. It is common to just scrape the loose paint off leaving an alligator skin effect on your final painting surface. You can see an extreme example of this in the picture below.

Because of my lack of experience, I made only about $13 per hour. However, I paid attention to invoicing and other aspects of the business on my occasional contract jobs, so I could probably start a painting business myself if I wanted to. This leads us to our next advantage . . .
I ended up scraping off paint and wallpaper down to the plaster. It took a couple days to finish. I’m so glad they only did that in the one room! Again, moisture really helped in the process. The more I soaked the walls, the easier it was to scrape and remove the wallpaper and paint. After I had the entire room scraped down to the bare plaster walls, I realized I would have to repair some cracks and skim coat the entire room if there were going to be halfway decent looking walls.
