Hoffman advises prioritizing painting your kitchen, bathrooms, entryways and foyer. Purchase a sample can and paint a swatch of wall or a piece of cardboard that color to check if it works in the space. Observing how natural and artificial light plays on the color can help you narrow down which to use.
Hey Amanda, trust me, the trim wasn’t really all that nice. It looked as though about 20 different curtain hardwares had been either nailed or screwed into each on. After we filled all the holes, paint was really the only option :/ I’m with you on keeping original wood intact! Nadya Elvina February 26, 2015 .

A perk of going dark: You may be able to skip the primer if the original paint is a lighter color, and you may need fewer coats! Another cost-saving idea: Refresh your house with the same color rather than choosing a different hue; you’ll probably need just one coat. For some cons of dark paints, skip to #8. 5. You’ll need to protect your plants. When painting your home, it’s best to do it when it’s cooler. This is because direct sunlight can cause your paint to dry too quickly. This will not affect the actual paint. It just means harder work for the exterior house painters. Heat allows for visible brush strokes and general unevenness. This issue will also occur if it’s especially hot out, so if possible, only paint on days with mild weather. Or, follow the sun. While the sun is on one side of the home you can paint the opposing side. House painters call this chasing the sun.
That said, if you have your heart set on doing it yourself and your house is single-story and relatively detail-free, consider hiring the pros to do the arduous work of prepping your home and property (including power-washing, patching, sanding, and scraping), and you can paint it yourself afterward. 3. You would likely spend several days, maybe more than a week, painting your home, and you likely wouldn’t get as clean a finish as you would if you hired a professional painter.
A BIG shout-out to Josh Douglas of A Painter's Touch. He just finished painting the exterior of my house, and I am so pleased. He is neat, thorough, very fair in his pricing, and HONEST.

Another tip! If you’re painting textured walls, even edge lock tape won’t always do the trick! You can put the tape on the wall and then go over the edges with a thin stripe or PAINTABLE clear caulking! One part will come up with the tape, the other stays on the wall under the paint, and keeps the paint from seeping under the edge of the tape. Just remember to keep it thin so you don’t see it on the wall! Hazel February 25, 2015
