In this article, we’re covering everything you need to know about exterior house painting. After reading this article, you’ll know the ins and outs of how and when to paint your home or business, and what type of paint to use for lasting results.
Use fine-grit sandpaper to remove the gloss from the surface you’re painting. You want to use sandpaper to remove just the glossy part, not all the old paint.
We prepped the house by pressure washing. I found this affordable pressure washer on Amazon and it worked great! We sprayed the brick with just water to clean it. The vinyl was sprayed with a small amount of outdoor cleaner added to really loosen the grime. We worked from top to bottom and used a ladder with ladder stabilizer, making sure not to spray upward on the siding (this would cause water to run behind the siding which can be very bad). Once this was done, we let the siding completely dry before the next steps.
Flat paint, aka matte paint, falls on the other end of the spectrum. Matte paint has no shine at all, and it’s difficult to clean without rubbing off the paint because water removes it easily.

Iron Ore is also a super popular choice for front doors, garage doors, and exterior trim. No question, adding this deep charcoal paint as an accent can modernize a tired-looking house exterior. You can also pair it with lush landscaping and greenery to bring out earth tones in the shade.

Another tip! If you’re painting textured walls, even edge lock tape won’t always do the trick! You can put the tape on the wall and then go over the edges with a thin stripe or PAINTABLE clear caulking! One part will come up with the tape, the other stays on the wall under the paint, and keeps the paint from seeping under the edge of the tape. Just remember to keep it thin so you don’t see it on the wall! Hazel February 25, 2015
You can adjust the size of the area you're covering with each full roller cover depending on how heavy or light the coverage is turning out. The paint should be heavy enough to cover but not heavy enough to run, sag, or drip.
Having now successfully completed several exterior and interior projects on my home, the Catchlight team feels like old friends. So I asked Nigel if there really was a way to guarantee that you hire the right painter. He admitted that when it comes to paint contractors, “it’s a bit of the Wild West.” With no formal training or licensing, anyone with a brush can be a painter. But he went on, there are tell-tail signs of a reputable company and important steps that a homeowner can take to ensure that they hire the best painter for their project. Here is what Nigel recommends: Above: Due to extensive wear, detailing, and paint build-up, historic houses like this circa 1890 farmhouse, in Shropshire, England, often need professional handling in order to achieve smooth finish. Speaking of warranties, when companies tell you they offer a warranty, ask yourself (or the representative of the company): Is the warranty in writing? Is it a certificate signed by the company and the paint manufacturer? Is your specific address printed on the certificate? Is the certificate transferable to the next owner, should you move?Is it a NON-pro-rated warranty? For A New Leaf Painting, the answer to all 5 questions is a resounding, “YES!”
