Painting the cut-ins will require patience and attention to detail. If you’re new to this, consider using painter’s tape. Alternatively, this video demonstrates how you can paint your ceiling cut-ins without tape, like a pro.
One of the most important factors affecting the cost of painting your entire house is size. Generally speaking, one gallon of primer 1 or paint is needed to cover 400 square feet of space. The average house is about 2,500 square feet. With this being said, you may need multiple coats to effectively cover your home’s interior and exterior, impacting the overall cost. Between materials and labor, you can expect to pay between $4,500 and $32,000 depending on the size of your home, number of stories, and shape of the rooms inside. Let’s take a closer look at each price point. The prices in the table below include only one coat of paint.

Vinyl siding usually doesn’t need to be painted because the color permeates the material. Then again, if you don’t like the color of your vinyl siding, you can paint it. For a sound finish, apply two coats of 100% acrylic latex paint. Be aware that, if you do paint your vinyl siding, it will require repainting in a few years.
For the best and longest lasting paint job possible, you’ll want to apply a layer of primer before the paint itself. Primer creates a base for the paint, seals pores in the wall, and makes stains easier to mask.
There are countless factors to consider if you want a truly accurate estimate for your budget. We’ll go over some of the most significant cost factors to help you understand what you’re paying for and how you can potentially save money on your painting project.
You’ll save time and money if you detect and remove lead paint before painting over it, so you may want to have a lead paint inspection for about $300 on average before hiring someone to paint your walls.

Interior painting cost per hour and exterior painter cost per hour are usually the same, ranging from $25 to $100 per hour and per painter. Therefore, two painters for a single hour would cost you $50 to $200 overall. Three painters would be $75 to $300 and so on. Painter rates per hour vary widely, depending on region, season, type of painting project, and experience level. Painters often charge by the hour if there are multiple painters on the job and various projects need to be done.
Completely saturate your roller cover in your paint bucket, then run it along the grid to push the paint into the fibers - repeating this a couple of times.

Norris says that you don’t want to use too many colors on the exterior. A variety of colors can be distracting and make the house appear choppy or smaller—distracting the buyer’s eye. One of her favorite color schemes is a neutral gray for the body, white for the trim and garages and a front door with a pop of color featuring brown or blue.

Awesome post! I just wanted to add a couple tips about cleaning brushes that might be helpful. If you’re painting and are coming back for second coats later the same day, you can put your brush in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out while you’re taking a break. When cleaning your brushes, use Murphy Oil Soap, it really helps to get the paint off and is eco friendly. You can even soak brushes in it and clean them later on if you’re a giant procrastinator like I am 🙂 I love following your progress with this house and am so stoked to see the finished product! Cheers and have a great day! Alexandra February 25, 2015 Jill @ Champagne for Everyday February 25, 2015
Painting condo units offer less complexity but are often larger than apartments. Added size and the prominence of higher ceilings and lofted areas can add to the cost of painting a condo. Correspondingly, the average cost to paint a condo unit is $1,400 – $4,800.
