Over the years I’ve hired many painters—from Task Rabbit amateurs to professional tradesmen—for both interior and exterior projects. Yet for all my experience, I still feel like hiring a good painter is a crap-shoot, that I’m no closer to discovering that secret formula that guarantees a great paint job every time. Based on the number of friends who painstakingly share their own painting horror stories, I’m not alone. Luckily for me, I have finally found a great painting contractor, Nigel Costolloe, owner of Catchlight Painting, in Newton, MA. I wish I could say that I came to Nigel due to my superior knowledge of how to sleuth out and hire great painters. Alas he was the guy I called to fix a job-gone-wrong.
My house was a 70s build, and almost completely wallpapered with a lot of the wallpaper painted over, which definitely didn’t help in removing it all! I also had a slightly different problem with removing wallpaper – the previous owners had used vinyl wallpaper, which when steamed stretched a lot rather than scraping off easily. It was easier to just score and scrape or peel off the paper dry, and later steam off any papery bits that were left on the wall.
For small painting jobs, hiring a handyman costs $35 per hour and up and is a cheap and effective solution. For large or detailed jobs, always hire a professional painter. Whomever you hire, be sure they don't cheap out on the paint, apply two coats, guarantee their work, and do proper preparation. How perfect of a job do you need? Will a few drips in the wrong place wreck your day? Do they have insurance? Can you afford it if they have an accident on the job? Do they have any references of previous work, a portfolio, or positive online reviews? Their costs may be low because they’re just starting out, or because they already have a terrible reputation. The J Clarke Painting website uses a rather simple design with lots of texts and a few images. By using bulleted and paragraphed text, the designers conveyed a message in an organized way. The top of the homepage makes good use of a revolving set of images.
I agree completely — never paint over wallpaper! My house is very old and the original owners had wallpaper (layer upon layer) in every room in the house — even the bathrooms. Then the last owner painted over the wallpaper. Yikes! What a mess. So glad most of it is gone but it was a chore. Thanks for the great tips to painting the house. Quality tools are key (and patience). Skylar Mitchell February 25, 2015
So you’ve decided to go the DIY route, and paint the interior of your house yourself. But where do you start? Which part of the house you should paint first?
As an example, the hourly rate for a painter in Chicago is nearly 30% higher when compared to a smaller city like St. Louis.
You want to know exactly what you are getting, and which candidate is offering the best deal, but things are not always as they seem on the surface.
