To determine the number of coats your project requires, first examine the surface you'll be painting. A porous, rough, textured or previously unpainted surface will generally require more paint, as will a project that involves a dramatic color change. TIP: If you choose a deep, intense color, you may need multiple coats or even a tinted primer for the best results. Less paint may be needed if your color change is subtle, or your home has many "unpaintable" features such as window panes or decorative stone.

Ladders. The height and surrounding grade of your house will determine the needed type and height of ladders you need. For a tall house, figure you’ll want a 16-foot extension ladder and a 6- or 8-foot stepladder. For a short house, just the stepladder should fill the bill.
