One of the most popular exterior colors for 2021 is Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams. Alabaster (SW 7008) is both timeless and on-trend this year as warmer, off-whites are in for exteriors. No question, this is a rare combination for any modern exterior or interior paint color.
Prep work for old homes can be especially difficult. Poor prep work on an exterior will mean needing to re-paint sooner (sometimes literally within 1-2 years), which will cost far more time and money than doing it correctly in the first place. In fact, a good professional paint company may use more than half of the entire project time preparing a surface to paint. Trust the process; this time could be difference in hundreds of hours and dollars.
The average cost to paint the interior of a house falls somewhere between $1.50 and $3.50 per square foot. If you’re including the walls and trim plus the ceilings you will likely pay closer to $3-$4. The cost to paint a single room runs between $350 and $850 depending on size. The cost to paint a home interior ranges between $1200-$3900. Labor costs alone account for 70%-85% of your total paint job. If there is damage to the walls that needs to be repaired the cost will obviously be higher. These are the average costs if you are paying a professional. Many homeowners choose to tackle the project on their own which can be more cost-effective.

I ended up scraping off paint and wallpaper down to the plaster. It took a couple days to finish. I’m so glad they only did that in the one room! Again, moisture really helped in the process. The more I soaked the walls, the easier it was to scrape and remove the wallpaper and paint. After I had the entire room scraped down to the bare plaster walls, I realized I would have to repair some cracks and skim coat the entire room if there were going to be halfway decent looking walls.

Generally speaking, new construction painting prices are lower than the cost of repainting a house that is already built and decorated. New construction paint jobs include less prep work and cleanup for both interior and exterior jobs. Painters on new construction start their work after any drywall, plumbing, or electrical work, but before anything else is in the home. This means you will not have to worry about any carpet or flooring. Plus, there won’t be any cabinetry, furniture, or lighting fixtures in the way either.
If your home was built before 1978, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires your exterior paint to be checked for lead. Lead-based paint is toxic and the leading cause of lead poisoning. If your home tests positive for lead, the EPA recommends hiring a lead-safe contractor.
How much you spend on mold remediation depends on how far the infestation has spread and whether it has caused significant property damage. You can usually expect to pay between $1,373 and $3,325 for mold remediation, but in severe cases, the bill could run into the tens of thousands.
What about a paint sprayer? A spray-painted finish may not be quite as durable as hand-painted one, but using a power sprayer can be a real time saver, especially on hard-to-paint irregular surfaces such as shingle siding and latticework.
