You could try asking a question in online painting forum, but be aware that there is a lot of debate. Some say you should paint your trim before painting your wall colour, while others argue that it’s necessary to paint your wall first to get a clinical finish.
Most experts will advise that you to paint your exterior walls every 5-10 years, depending on climate, previous paint job, and other factors that we will discuss later on. Home improvements are fun projects to conquer, but we often get misled due to false information we find online or on TV. Here are five myths that need busting.
You should paint your house exterior every 5 to 10 years. Painted wood surfaces last 4 to 8 years while brick and stucco can last 6 to 11 years. Of course, this depends on how much care your painters put into exterior prep work. A poorly painted exterior won’t last 1 or 2 seasons before the paint starts peeling. That’s why hiring an exterior painting company with a good written warranty like Improovy is important.
For small painting jobs, hiring a handyman costs $35 per hour and up and is a cheap and effective solution. For large or detailed jobs, always hire a professional painter. Whomever you hire, be sure they don't cheap out on the paint, apply two coats, guarantee their work, and do proper preparation. How perfect of a job do you need? Will a few drips in the wrong place wreck your day? Do they have insurance? Can you afford it if they have an accident on the job? Do they have any references of previous work, a portfolio, or positive online reviews? Their costs may be low because they’re just starting out, or because they already have a terrible reputation. As for your brush, dip it into your cut bucket about 1/3 of the way up the bristles. Push the end of the bristles against the inside of the bucket or another flat surface, moving it around in a circular motion to ensure that all of the bristles are evenly coated with paint.

Josh, some great work on the renovation, it’s come up really nicely! It’s good to see you stressing the importance of not taking short cuts when it comes to prepping and removing wallpaper. It definitely does lead to more problems down the road when done incorrectly. However there is a caveat on that. If the wallpaper is in good condition and you have primed it properly, you can get away with painting over wallpaper. On a few jobs where the client has been on a tight budget, we have used an oil based primer to really seal the adhesive and keep then moisture from the paint away. Has worked well and we haven’t got any call backs. But I’d still agree with you and always push for stripping back wallpaper where possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as the saying goes. Also, would love to see how your painted popcorn ceilings came up. We call it ‘vermiculite’. Its quite old school and we come across it in school jobs and old buildings occasionally. Jake Beals May 09, 2020

When painting your home, it’s best to do it when it’s cooler. This is because direct sunlight can cause your paint to dry too quickly. This will not affect the actual paint. It just means harder work for the exterior house painters. Heat allows for visible brush strokes and general unevenness. This issue will also occur if it’s especially hot out, so if possible, only paint on days with mild weather. Or, follow the sun. While the sun is on one side of the home you can paint the opposing side. House painters call this chasing the sun.
It looks fantastic! I do have a couple of questions: how did it do through the winter? Do you have any regrets? And if your eves were same color as the siding, how would you paint those? Eves are my main concern…. August 14, 2021 August 28, 2021
Then it’s time to research the overall cost to DIY. This includes estimating how much it will cost you to complete exterior repairs, purchase the necessary amount of paint, rollers, brushes, and rent equipment such as power washers and ladders. Once you’ve priced out the total DIY cost, assess which route is most cost-effective.
